This class is for beginner to intermediate students and will focus on learning the basics of Asian brush painting along with some of the culture. Students will learn about the painting supplies, ink and brush preparation (from traditional grinding and preparing ink to modern use of ready made ink), loading the brush, brush types.

After learning about the basics we will explore our painting techniques and practice brush strokes: lines, orchid stokes, bamboo, plum-tree branch along with learning some of the traditional history of the Four Gentlemen: Plum blossom/branch(Winter), Orchid (Spring), Bamboo (Summer), and Chrysanthemum (Autumn). With the related brush strokes, students can create birds, butterflies, fish, flowers.
 

MATERIALS LIST
-
Chinese brushes (OAS- orientalartsupply.com : choice of PRE Series Brush set @ $40.00 or Premium Artist Brush set @ $70.00)
-12" or 18"roll of rice paper (OAS practice roll or Yasutomo roll)
-Ink (Yasutomo liquid sumi ink)
-White or light grey felt appx 24" x 36"( can buy felt at OAS or Amazon)
-Two water containers-can be clean plastic take-out containers
-Fine mist spray bottle
-(3) ink dishes-size of small sauce dish (Cheap Joes has stackable porcelain palettes or maybe dollar store)
-(2) white plates-from the Dollar store (not plastic)
-paper towels
-Chinese watercolor set: Yasutomo brand, or Professional grade Japanese watercolor-Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors set of 18 (can be purchased at Blicks or Amazon or OAS)
-12” ruler from dollar store
**Ink stone and ink stick (for grinding ink experience-we will be using ink from bottle due to time scheduled for class) can be purchased at Blicks or Amazon.
