This course introduces kids and teens ages 10 - 14 to the basics of hand and machine sewing. The goal is to build confidence and skills in sewing by completing a basic sewing project.
Learn how to: safely use sewing tools and a sewing machine, thread and knot a needle, cut a pattern out of material, hand sew a variety of stitches (straight, running, back, and blanket; learn parts of the sewing machine, how to thread a needle, wind and insert a bobbin, sew straight and zig zag stitches, seams, curves, and basic shapes, and control stitching speed. Apply creativity to a project using basic decorating techniques (buttons, applique, embellishments).
Project ideas: Felt shapes, a small pillow, toy for a child or pet, pillowcase tote bag, hair scrunchie, or pajama pants.
Supplies: The follow supplies will be available, but feel free to bring your own sewing machine
-Cotton fabric material
-Patterns
-Needles (for hand sewing)
-All purpose thread in a variety of colors
-Pair of fabric scissors or rotary cutter, and small embroidery scissors
-18” quilting ruler
-Pins and pin cushion
-Retractable fabric tape measure
-Chalk or fabric marker
-Buttons, appliques, and embellishments
-Sewing Machine (yours or ours)
