What is collage and where did it come from?
Collage is an art form that includes integrating and combining various images and media -usually 2D material (though 3D material and digital collage is currently a form that is used) to create a completely new work of art that is unique. By using simple tools like glue, tape, or even sewing, collage is for everyone!
Historically, it was said that collage was first documented by the cubist founding fathers Pablo Picasso and George Braque. This technique has also been favored by Avant-garde artists as well as surreal painters and pop artists. Through collage, anyone can create their own world, use it as a creative process before committing to a final project, or communicate to the outside world, whether politically or for personal sentiments. There are no rules when creating with collage!
Islip Arts is excited to participate in this year's celebration by hosting a Collective Collage Workshop. Students will be encouraged to choose either a postcard or two to collage and send to someone they love, or create a mini zine that tells a story, holds poems, or expresses any creative endeavors.
In addition to the workshop, there will be a community collage mural where participants can add their unique touch and bring a collective vision to life.
