JAN 2025 / Featured Artist: Lisa Stanko

On View Jan 7 - Feb 4, 2025

Lisa Stanko grew up on Long Island and always enjoyed painting and drawing. Her parents wanted to encourage this and signed her up for art lessons at the age of ten. She started with oil paints and fell in love. Continuing with lessons throughout her teens, which included still life, landscapes, seascapes, portraits and sketching from live models. She was very pleased with all these classes and being shy, it gave her much-needed self-confidence.

The hunger for more artistic experiences led her to become a Fine Arts Major in college. Lisa really came out of her shell as she was shown new ways of looking at things and how to loosen up artistically. Where her work began in a linear fashion, it then became more painterly. One professor made the biggest impression by teaching how to see things as values instead of lines. Color theory was another very important class. She still uses many ideas and techniques in her work today.

Lisa’s first job after college was as a layout artist for Topline Advertising in Plainview. She really enjoyed designing ads and taking it all the way through to the finished product. Back in the day, delivering the work to Newsday in person was the way it was done.

Fast forward to 2022, after raising a family and working as a retail manager for many years, Lisa retired and began painting again. She has been drawn mostly to bold abstracts. Having a wonderful time and enjoying participating in many Long Island and California exhibitions.  These include Mills Pond, The Firefly Artists, Art League of L.I., The Catbird Seat, Babylon Arts, Patchogue Arts, BBLG Gallery, Las Laguna Gallery, Covet Art Gallery, East End Arts, Islip Arts, Gallery North, The Heckscher Museum and solo exhibit at the Daniel Gale Agency in Northport.

Painting keeps her sane and blissfully happy.
